Where are the collections held during the redevelopment? image

The majority of RAMM's collections have moved to new permanent, purpose-built, state-of-the-art collections store.  A selection of artefacts were on display in RAMM in the Library until March 2010, located next to Exeter Central Library.

How many objects does the Museum hold?

The Museum has in its collection approximately 1.5 million objects, ranging from natural history, archaeology, fine art, decorative art and world cultures.

What have the curators been doing since the Museum has been closed for redevelopment?

The curators have been working with the redevelopment designers on the new Museum displays; choosing the collections for redisplay; researching and interpreting the collections; writing new labels, working on a new database; building the website; curating exhibitions; and working on the opening shows for when the Museum reopens.

Can I bring an object in to be valued?

No. We are unable to give valuations.

How many of the objects will now be on display?

The redevelopment work has increased the amount of objects that can be on display at any one time.

Can I bring in an object to have it identified and find out more information about it?

Yes. You can take objects in for identification, or to find out more information about them from Curatorial Staff. Curatorial staff can be contacted by calling reception on 01392 665858, or check out the ‘RAMM People' pages on the website for our Collections and Interpretation Team.

Were all the objects removed from RAMM?

No, the elephant and giraffe had to remain in the building due to their large size. They have been sealed in protective packaging during the redevelopment, and will be moved out of the museum to be positioned into their new gallery spaces in 2010, via a crane.
