Devon archaeology - RAMM

RAMM holds a wide range of archaeological objects discovered in Devon from the 19th century onwards. It includes important collections of Prehistoric material from Dartmoor and East Devon, Roman military and civilian sites, and medieval towns and rural settlements.

Highlights of the collection include:

The earliest stone tools made by humans - a remarkable collection of 350,000-year-old flint handaxes from the gravel pits at Broom near Axminster.Prehistoric Devon - huge collections of stone tools found by field-walking, the dramatic earthworks at Hembury, burials at Farway and Upton Pyne, the mysterious wooden figure from Kingsteignton all tell about life and death in Prehistory.

Barrows and buried hoards - prehistoric peoples buried their dead in monuments and with grave goods. RAMM has important collections from Farway Down and Upton Pyne amongst others. Bronze tools and weapons, even a wooden figure were buried by prehistoric peoples.
