Jaws open on our new gallery

01 April 2008

Jaws open on our new city centre home, a new gallery and family space next to Exeter Central Library, on Saturday 5 April.

Visitors will enter through the jaws of a Rorqual, a type of whale, into RAMM's exciting new venture. Looming above their heads they will see the skeleton of a pilot whale. For many children this will be their first chance to see these artefacts that haven't been on display for many years.

RAMM in the Library has an exhibition gallery and a family space and is a home for RAMM in the city centre while the museum building is being redeveloped. The project has been made possible through a partnership with Devon County Council.

The exhibition gives a flavour of a museum in transit, displaying a selection of objects from RAMM's collection and their relationship to Exeter through time. Objects on display range from the oldest item in the collection - a 4,500 million year old meteorite - to iconic objects from the 20th century.

The family space provides a focus for hands-on activities and special family events and includes RAMM's much-loved activity boxes. Call in here as often as you like or make a special date with our busy programme of family activities. These give everyone the chance to join in with storytelling, creative play, mummification and more.

There is also a programme of informal activities for all ages.

Topics include Tudors, textiles, World War II recollections and artefacts from around the world.

Open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm, except bank holidays. Admission free.
