RAMM objects feature in Paris exhibition

RAMM has contributed items from its ethnography collection to an exhibition being held in Paris this summer.

Pacific Encounters: Art and Divinity in Polynesia 1760-1860 presents 270 rare and stunning sculptures, ornaments, textiles and valuables and explores Polynesia during a dynamic period in its history, the era of contact with European voyagers, missionaries and traders.

Britain holds the world's most comprehensive collections of 18th and 19th century Polynesian material but much of it is little known and seldom exhibited. Pacific Encounters brings together important material from British and other collections in a major exhibition. RAMM's contribution to the exhibition includes late 18th century material from Easter Island, Tonga and Hawaii.

Pacific Encounters is on show at Musee du quai Branly in Paris from 16 June to 14 September 2008.
