The Portable Antiquities Scheme

Welcome to the Portable Antiquities Scheme Page

Have you ever found an old object and wondered what it was?

Every year thousands of old objects are found by the public. Many people find objects whilst gardening, walking, farming or metal detecting.

What is the Portable Antiquities Scheme?

The scheme was set up to record details about objects that people find, so that information about these objects is not lost forever.

Help us to piece together Devon's past!

These discoveries, or ‘archaeological finds' can help us to understand more about how people lived in the past.

If you have found something that you think might be archaeological, Danielle Wootton, the Finds Liaison Officer, is happy to hear from you. She can help to identify and record your find for you.

What would we like to record?

Anything over 300 years old that has been worked or made by humans.

For example:

  • Pottery
  • Flint
  • Stone
  • Bone
  • Metal
  • Glass
  • Organic materials (leather etc)
  • Even tiny scraps might be the remains of something important!
