Early Years with RAMM
You are never too young to appreciate a museum!
These days, many museums actively welcome visitors with very young children, and RAMM and St Nicholas Priory are definitely amongst them.
Children are our future custodians and curators, researchers and historians. More important, they are citizens who need to experience their own (and other people's) culture both present and past, and to actively engage in using it for their own creativity and social value.
Museums collect objects because they have a meaning, or a story. For children, being interested in objects is just part of being interested in the world around us. Objects can be useful for sparking off work in all areas of play, learning and development.
RAMM contributes to the Early Years Foundation Stage themes through planned Early Years sessions with a variety of childcare providers and the activities provided at Fun Days. We aim to make our museum a child-friendly environment.
RAMM has also been working in partnership with the West Exe Children's Centre on a number of projects.
In 2009 RAMM was part of the team of South West museums participating in an action research project to find out how best to support parents and carers who visit museums and galleries. Jo Graham of Learning Unlimited wrote a report and summary of these activities called Which Way Shall We Go? You can read her reports here.
