John Gendall  1790-1865

1820-40, Oil on canvas

Size of original work: 65.2 x 81.8 cm

Gendall’s painting probably depicts the wooded stretch of the Avon valley near Loddiswell, South Devon. Born in Devon, John Gendall moved to London in 1811 where Sir John Soane introduced him to the publisher Rudolph Ackermann. He worked for Ackermann for several years, conducting experiments in the art of lithography and contributing numerous illustrations to the firm's publications and topographical series. Gendall continued to paint landscapes of Devonshire after leaving Ackermann's employment, and exhibited his works at the Royal Academy until 1863.

Unfortunately this painting was vandalised and had to be removed.
