Zoology
There is an astonishing variety of material, ranging geographically from Antarctica to the Arctic, through the Antipodes, the Americas, Asia, Africa and Europe. The subject areas are equally diverse ranging though much of the animal kingdoms. A growing collection of local invertebrates is set alongside international collections of over 120,000 butterflies and moths, 30,000 beetles, 38,000 molluscs, 6,000 starfish and sea-urchins, 8,500 birds and 1,200 mammals.
The continued development of the collection has resulted in a range of specimens of local, national and international importance.
