New acquisitions
RAMM has recently acquired a range of works for its collections:
Bomberg painting
2011 - Bideford, Devon 1946, an important post-second world war landscape painting by David Bomberg. Acquired through the Acceptance in Lieu scheme.
Egyptian tapestry
2010 - An Egyptian tapestry, 'Fields and Village on the Nile', woven by Mahrous Abdou and acquired from the Ramses Wissa Wassef Arts Centre, Egypt. It was purchased with assistance from Dr Jenni Balfour-Paul, The Art Fund, the MLA/V&A Purchase Grant Fund, and the Friends of Exeter Museums and Art Gallery.
Cosway miniature
2010 – Cosway miniature, a 7.2 cm-high portrait of William, 3rd Viscount Courtenay, one of Richard Cosway’s finest works. Painted in 1793, in watercolour on ivory, it has an unidentified lock of hair sealed behind. Purchased with the help of the MLA/ V&A Purchase Grant Fund, the Art Fund and the Friends of Exeter Museums and Art Gallery .
Lacquered bowl
2010 - Golden Fields of Rice (2009), an intricately crafted, £17,000 lacquered container with gold motifs and a fine example of the craftsmanship of the highly skilled lacquer maker, Mutsumi Suzuki (1942 to 2009).
Batoni painting
2008 - A painting of 'John Rolle Walter', 1753, by Pompeo Girolamo Batoni, purchased with assistance from the Heritage Lottery Fund, The Art Fund, the MLA/V&A Purchase Grant Fund, Devon County Council, the Friends of Exeter Museums and Art Gallery and the Reynolds Chard Bequest, 2008.
