Repairing the building
An important part of RAMM's development project is repairing the 140 year old building.
Some of the galleries that were built over a Norman defensive ditch were in danger of slipping into it. These have now been underpinned to stop subsidence. Major structural defects threatening these galleries were discovered and repaired. Damp proof work has been undertaken in the basement and roof coverings upgraded and replaced.
Old fittings and recent additions were stripped out of RAMM's emptied building uncovering original architectural features and revealing the splendour of the original Victorian spaces. Many will be visible in the newly refurbished galleries.
