Reading Rocks
Fossils and minerals are probably the more exiting and intriguing specimens in a geology collection and attract most of our visitors attention. The lumps of rock however often get overlooked. Rocks are some of the most valuable keys to unravel the past of our planet. They tell us a story of moving continents, rising mountain chains, erupting volcanoes and extending oceans.
Rocks can be read like a book, like an exiting novel or fascinating crime story. A cliff of yellow sandstone can tell us a story of an ancient desert with huge wind-driven dunes moving under the blazing sun. A coral limestone can be the account of growing reefs in a shallow tropical sea teeming with life. And how about a lump of ancient volcanic lava? Doesn’t it spark our imagination about fire, new born islands and natural disasters ? Explore local stones from RAMMs geology collection here !
