These documents were written to assist teachers of Key Stage 2 children with suggestions for pre- and post-visit activities in the classroom. However, the activities can also be used by children for personal study to extend learning about this very important period in Exeter’s long history.
Pre-visit activities: These activities help children to explore the evidence of Roman life before they visit the museum. Activities include “What’s the damage?” – Getting Sorted – Falling Apart – Ask an Object – Ask a Roman soldier – Sizing up the Romans – Drawing objects.
Post-visit activities: After your visit you can extend your activities to find out more about Roman customs. Activities include cooking – making a time capsule – time lines – making Roman pots – the Roman housewarming party – making segmented armour – making a sword and shield – playing Ludus Lantrunculorum.

Find out about the people who were living in Devon before the Romans arrived and how we know about the Romans in and around Exeter. What was life like for the Roman soldiers in Exeter and what happened when the Second Legion left Isca? This resource has been written with interested 10 year olds in mind, but can be adapted for younger and older children.
