School visits
Workshops at school : September to July 2012
Due to recent changes in our schools service funding we are unable to offer our former service to schools. However we are temporarily able to offer workshops in schools through external providers working on behalf of RAMM. This arrangement will operate until July 2012.
For Roman workshops, please contact Oly Martin on 07790 272588 or olymartin@yahoo.co.uk. As this workshop is Oly’s own, (although there are many elements which are recognisable from the RAMM workshop) you will need to discuss all arrangements direct with him. Workshop summary: Oly's workshops are designed to increase children's knowledge and understanding about the Roman invasion and its impact on Iron Age life in south west Britain. Through role-play, activities and object handling (replica and real) children have to decide whether to accept Roman rule, perhaps becoming a Roman or to fight for their traditional way of life. The workshops are aimed at KS 1 and 2 but are adaptable for all ages and abilities. The cost is £110 per one day workshop plus travel outside Exeter. RAMM also has free Roman downloadable resources which you may find useful.
For World War II workshops, please contact Neil Heasman on 07872 538132 or neil@thetimetravellers.org. Neil also has a website at www.thetimetravellers.org. As this workshop is Neil’s own, (although there are many elements which are recognisable from the RAMM workshop) you will need to discuss all arrangements direct with him. Workshop summary: it is 1942 and following the most devastating air raid on Exeter, a local ARP Warden is travelling to schools to advise and challenge children about what they can do to ‘Do Their Bit’ to help the war effort. Using many original and replica artefacts and clothing, they will investigate important issues such as food, clothing, and evacuation. They will learn the importance of good communications through using Morse code to help our secret agent and will be trained in taking Air Raid Precautions (ARP), working in teams to deal with bombs, fires, gas masks and injured people. A surprise air raid puts them through their paces. The cost for a day’s workshop is £50 + £4.50 per child for a maximum of 40 children. RAMM also has free World War II downloadable resources which you may find useful.
For Ancient Egyptian workshops please contact Neil Heasman on 07872 538132 or neil@thetimetravellers.org. Neil also has a website at www.thetimetravellers.org. As this workshop is Neil’s own, (although there are many elements which are recognisable from the RAMM workshop) you will need to discuss all arrangements direct with him. Workshop summary: as would-be archaeologists, children learn to piece together the evidence about life and death in Ancient Egypt through artefact handling, studying of images and dramatic role play, The day is led in role by a 1940’s Archaeologist who sets the scene for the children’s challenge: ‘to consider what they would do if they ever discovered a hidden tomb’. There are three sessions across which the children ‘discover’ a tomb, piece together evidence about Ancient Egyptian society, interact with artefacts in different meaningful ways and perform the mummification process within an embalmers workshop. All of this will enable them to 'meet' their challenge. The cost for a day’s workshop is £50 + £4.50 per child for a maximum of 40 children. . RAMM also has free Ancient Egypt downloadable resources which you may find useful.

RAMM
We will be redeveloping a new schools service in the light of major funding changes. Here's what will be on offer when we re-open for school visits from January 3rd onwards:
RAMM Market Research Visits – Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills (All key stages). With so many new galleries, exhibitions and facilities, we want to involve local school students in a real-life market research opportunity. We need their ideas to help create school visits to RAMM that are truly child-centred and focus on what excites them most. Between January 3rd and July 31st 2012 we’re inviting schools to visit RAMM for FREE and be Museum Market Researchers. Using downloadable resources (available to download from the lefthand side of this page) to help frame a PLTS-based teacher-led visit, we would like students to share with us their thoughts and feelings about new RAMM. To book a Market Researcher Visit, please email kate.osborne@exeter.gov.uk.
Out in the Open is the KS2 school visit package related to Into the Light, our exhibition about French and English Impressionist paintings. This is an opportunity for your students to experience original impressionist and post-impressionist art works from France and Britain. Downloadable resources for classroom and visit activities and an on-site resource box are available to support a FREE teacher-led visit to this exhibition. To book a visit (available between 3rd January and 9th March 2012) please email kate.osborne@exeter.gov.uk
Gesture and Identity in Art: Is this Who you Are? is the KS3 school visit package related to The Road to Rome, our exhibition about the 18th century Grand Tour. This is an opportunity for KS3 students to explore the issues of gesture and personal identity through world-class artworks relating to the 18th century Grand Tour of Europe - the gap year(s) for the young and loaded of yesteryear.
