Karen Marshall (Canny Marshall Ltd), Temporary Lead for Audience Development and Marketing
How I ended up at RAMM
My background is in tourism development and marketing. Our family moved here from the North East in 2014 (following my husband and a clever new job) and I was delighted to get this role at the museum. If I’d have been asked where I would most like to work in Exeter when I arrived, I would have chosen RAMM. RAMM was one of the very first places we visited when we came to look around the area before we moved here.
My background started in design and moved on to hotel marketing followed by place and destination marketing. I’ve been lucky to work in tourism too, developing partnerships and managing heritage projects. I currently do marketing for public, private and third sector organisations including festival and performing arts marketing.
Best part of my job
I still get a surprise when I walk out of my office and into the museum. As well as the wonderful display and collections and seeing all the visitors, I love the building. How the old sits beautifully with the new, the contrast of the bright light spaces and the dark quiet areas.
What I like most about RAMM
Walking in the door. The friendly greeting I get when I arrive at the front entrance and the sight of the sweeping grand staircase against the hot pink wall. I do love the butterfly room too, in particularly a specific iridescent green beetle and a transparent gold and coral butterfly.
