Topsham Art Group is the fourth of the five shortlisted entries for the Local Art Show 2017 competition. Voting coupons are found in the Express & Echo. Only original coupons will be accepted. The winning group will be announced on Thursday 26 October 2017. The Local Art Show 2017 will run from 13 December to 17 January 2018.

Topsham Art Group statement

Topsham Art Group (TAG) has held exhibitions in the town for 51 years. There are 150 members who meet once a month to enjoy a programme of lectures and demonstrations. In addition, there are critiques, workshops and group visits to exhibitions and galleries in the South West. Guests are welcome and frequently attend our events.

A Summer Exhibition of the members’ work is held over two weeks in August. This exhibition and the monthly meetings are held at the Topsham Primary School, thanks to a good relationship with both the school staff and Devon County Council’s Education Department. The Group is also supported by local businesses and professional groups who sponsor the exhibition catalogue and help to advertise our public shows. The Summer Exhibition usually attracts around 1000 visitors many of whom come from
outside the local area and about 20 to 30 percent of works are sold.

The Group raises money for charities (recently Hospicecare, Help for Heroes, Estuary League of Friends, Topsham Swimming Pool and FORCE) at its exhibitions and is a supporter of the volunteer-run Topsham Museum. The Group published the annual Topsham Calendar in 2010, 2013 and again for 2017. This helped to raise funds for the Topsham School PTA as well as spreading views of the attractive local area around the world via its detachable postcards.

The portfolio submitted for this exhibition covers a wide range of styles and subjects, and TAG would use the opportunity of a show at RAMM to demonstrate the members’ ability in all media, including watercolour, oil, acrylic, print, gouache and mosaic, as well as in subject matter. Dartmoor is wild and beautiful but also has intimate and exotic parts around it’s periphery. We aim to show some of these as well as some of the animals and people who live and work on the moor. We would also show a number of sketchbooks which are the best way of seeing how an artist’s mind works.

We hope that the exhibition will encourage more local people to visit the moor and also take up art as a relaxing and rewarding pastime and to inspire young people to see art as something for them to take an interest in. Not everyone can get to the big shows in London, so showing the work of our experienced and talented local group could inject some enthusiasm and sparkle into the imaginations of young Exeter minds, which may not normally be exposed to art. It might also attract new people in to our City museum who would go on to explore it’s rich and diverse collections.

The Group welcomes the opportunity to compete with other local art groups to gain the votes of the readers of the Express and Echo and to hold an exhibition at the highly regarded Royal Albert Memorial Museum.
